Cloud storage for photographers helps, but no single service does every job well. Some services back up a whole computer. Some keep files in sync for easy sharing. One is built around portfolios and client proofing. The seventh choice here is a local-drive method that becomes much safer when paired with cloud storage.

The goal is not to put every file in one online folder and hope. A stronger plan follows the 3-2-1 backup rule: keep three copies, use two kinds of storage, and keep one copy away from your home or studio.

What to compare in online photo storage

A reliable cloud storage service needs enough storage space for RAW image files, video files, sidecars, catalogs, presets, and documents. Professional photographers should also check whether mobile devices can preview large files and share files with clients. Storing a RAW file is not the same as showing a useful preview.

The best cloud backup for photos also needs a clear recovery path. Look at deleted-file history, older versions, full-library restore methods, and how much free disk space a restore needs. A backup solution that is easy to upload but hard to bring home is not ready for a deadline.

Privacy matters for private homes, family sessions, unreleased products, and client documents. Zero-knowledge storage can reduce provider access to file contents, but a lost password or key may be harder to recover.

Check desktop apps, mobile uploads, links, proofing, file requests, and creative-app support. Estimate the library size, add room for growth and history, then compare the full cost over several years.

1. Backblaze: best for simple, large offsite backup

Quick verdict: Choose Backblaze when the main need is an automatic copy of a Mac or Windows computer and the external drives attached to it.

Backblaze Computer Backup sends user files to the cloud in the background. Storage is not capped by a fixed number of terabytes, and supported directly attached drives can be included. It fits a single user with an archive on one workstation and several USB or Thunderbolt drives.

The key word is backup. Backblaze mirrors files that still exist on the protected device. It is not unlimited photo storage where local originals can be erased. Computer Backup also excludes NAS shares, system files, applications, and Time Machine volumes.

Backblaze documents a desktop restore app, web downloads, mobile access for selected files, and an optional mailed USB drive. Read its current restore choices and Version History rules before a loss. A large restore still needs time, free disk space, and a folder plan.

2. Google Drive and Google One: best for familiar sharing

Quick verdict: Choose Google Drive when easy links, shared folders, browser access, and common office tools matter as much as photo storage.

Google One adds storage shared by Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos, so mail and phone photos can reduce room for client work. Drive can store any file type. A non-Google file can reach 5 TB when the account has enough space.

Drive for desktop can stream or mirror My Drive. Streaming keeps most data online. Mirroring keeps a full local copy and uses more disk space. Both modes sync changes, so Drive should sit beside a separate backup.

Drive works well for JPEG selections, contracts, shot lists, invoices, and shared folders. It can store RAW files, but previews vary by camera format. Keep catalogs and sidecars with the masters, then test a Google Takeout export.

Google says an older non-Google file version may be removed after 30 days or 100 newer versions unless marked to keep. That can fix some mistakes, but it is not permanent history.

Google Drive and Google One keep a shared photo folder available across common devices.

  • Drive, Gmail, and Photos draw from the same account quota.

3. pCloud: best for optional client-side encryption

Quick verdict: Choose pCloud when normal cloud-drive access is useful but a separate, zero-knowledge folder is needed for the most private files.

pCloud Drive can hold files without placing them all on the computer. Backup can watch selected folders, while revisions, Trash, and Rewind cover recent changes. History depends on the account and add-ons, so check the real recovery window.

pCloud Crypto encrypts files on the device before upload. pCloud says it does not store the Crypto passphrase. This blocks provider access to those files, but a lost passphrase cannot be recovered.

Crypto covers its private folder, not every pCloud folder, and can make previews or sharing less easy. Keep sensitive releases and contracts there while normal folders handle work that needs quick links.

pCloud has recurring and lifetime plans. Its contract defines lifetime as the owner’s life or 99 years, whichever is shorter. Compare the included space, data region, history, and Crypto cost with several years of another service.

pCloud offers normal cloud-drive storage with an optional encrypted Crypto Folder.

4. Sync.com: best for built-in zero-knowledge privacy

Quick verdict: Choose Sync.com when privacy is the first concern and fewer photo-specific preview tools are acceptable.

Sync.com combines encrypted storage, sync, and sharing. It says storage uses zero-knowledge protection by default, while its terms note that encryption can vary by plan, feature, or setting. Check the chosen plan.

The desktop Sync folder copies changes to connected devices. Sync Vault is cloud-only space that does not sync back to every computer. It can keep an older job online without filling a laptop.

Version and deleted-file recovery windows depend on the plan. Sync says photos are stored without compression. Its preview list covers TIFF, JPEG, PNG, and PSD, but not the main camera RAW types checked here. Download RAW files to inspect them.

This works for private client files and shared JPEGs. It is less suited to fast browser culling, many creative-app links, or broad RAW previews.

Sync.com centers its storage and sharing workflow on zero-knowledge privacy.

5. Dropbox: best for team collaboration and sync

Quick verdict: Choose Dropbox when several people need to collect, review, comment on, and move files through a shared workflow.

Dropbox is strongest as an active workspace. Shared folders give view or edit access. File requests accept client or second-shooter uploads without an account. Paid plans preview many RAW types within stated size and pixel limits.

Dropbox Backup protects selected folders and supported external drives. Version History handles file mistakes, while Rewind on eligible plans rolls back wider changes. The recovery window depends on the plan, and permanently deleted files sit outside it.

For a small studio, intake and comments may matter more than a photo-only archive. Keep permissions narrow and delivery folders apart from masters. Standard storage is encrypted in transit and at rest, but ordinary personal use is not a zero-knowledge vault.

6. PhotoShelter: best for portfolio plus image delivery

Quick verdict: Choose PhotoShelter when the same image library must power a public portfolio, private proofing, downloads, and delivery.

PhotoShelter accepts JPEG, TIFF, RAW, DNG, PSD, SVG, and PDF. It keeps the uploaded original while making web display copies. RAW files are archival here; the site shows an extracted JPEG rather than acting as a RAW editor.

The client workflow is the larger draw. Galleries can be public or access-limited. Eligible plans let clients mark proofing favorites. An official Lightroom plug-in can publish edits and metadata to galleries.

Video is not supported on the Photographers platform. IPTC data added to a RAW inside PhotoShelter is not written back to the downloaded original. Catalogs, sidecars, presets, and documents need another backup.

Use PhotoShelter around finished and archived images, not as the studio’s only copy. Test one full job: check color and metadata, send a proofing gallery, then compare downloaded originals with the local set.

7. Two external drives plus cloud: best hybrid plan

Quick verdict: Choose a two-drive method when fast local recovery and direct control matter, then add cloud or another offsite copy.

This is not a cloud service by itself. Two external hard drives make a useful local backup and can restore a large library without a long download. If the computer holds the working library, copy it to Drives A and B. If not, use Drive A as master and Drive B as backup.

Do not leave both drives connected. Deletion, power trouble, theft, or malicious software could reach both. Disconnect one after copying. Keep another copy in a secure offsite place or in cloud storage.

Use software that logs errors and verifies copied data. Keep masters, sidecars, catalogs, presets, and license records in a clear folder map. Label each drive with its role and last copy date. Power alone does not prove every file still reads.

A hybrid plan combines two local external-drive copies with a separate cloud or offsite copy.

Strengths

  • Fast restore without waiting for a full internet download.
  • Clear ownership and no monthly fee for the local copies.
  • Works well beside any cloud pick in this guide.

Limits

  • Manual habits matter, and drives age or fail.
  • A local pair alone does not protect against a studio-wide loss.

How to choose cloud storage for photographers

Start with the size of the real library

Measure all master folders, not just the latest exports. Add catalogs, sidecars, video, and client documents. Then estimate at least two years of growth. A plan that barely fits now will cause rushed moves later.

Recurring subscriptions spread the cost. An upfront plan such as pCloud Lifetime moves more cost to the start. Local drives need replacement over time. Cold object storage can look cheap until download, request, and software costs are added. Compare the whole restore, not storage alone.

Test the first upload with one complete job

Home internet plans often have a much slower upload rate than download rate. The first online backup may run for days or weeks. Use one job with RAW files, sidecars, a catalog copy, JPEGs, and a short video. Check whether the app pauses, reports errors, changes names, or needs the computer awake.

No provider speed claim can predict a home connection, Wi-Fi load, sleeping laptop, or distant data center. A real sample from the studio gives a more useful answer.

Match privacy to the client work

For ordinary landscape or product work, strong account security and provider-managed encryption may be enough. Private family sessions, legal evidence, health-related work, and unreleased campaigns can call for zero-knowledge storage or encryption before upload.

Turn on multi-factor authentication. Save recovery codes away from the computer. If a private key or Crypto passphrase cannot be reset, keep a protected paper or offline copy. Privacy is not helpful if the owner cannot restore the files.

Match sharing to the people involved

Dropbox and Google Drive are easy choices for mixed teams. PhotoShelter is stronger when proofing and image delivery are the job. Sync.com fits private sharing. Backblaze is mainly for recovery, not daily review.

Create separate areas for masters, ongoing work, and client delivery. Give clients view or upload rights only where needed. Remove old links when a job closes. Never make the only master copy depend on a shared folder that many people can edit.

Other cloud and hybrid routes

A NAS can give a studio one fast library for several computers. RAID may keep the NAS running after one disk fails, but it does not protect against deletion, theft, fire, or damage to the whole unit. Send a versioned NAS backup to another location or to object storage. Backblaze B2 is one such service and is separate from Backblaze Computer Backup.

Amazon S3 Glacier storage classes can hold cold archives that are rarely opened. Some classes require a restore request and a wait before files are available, and storage-duration or retrieval charges may apply. This route makes more sense for someone comfortable with buckets, lifecycle rules, and object-storage tools than for a photographer who wants a normal desktop folder.

Privacy-led services such as Internxt are also worth a look. Before choosing one, run the same sample-job test: upload RAW and sidecar pairs, preview what the service supports, share a finished set, delete a test file, and restore the whole folder.

A simple decision guide

Choose Backblaze for the least fussy offsite copy of one main computer and its supported drives. Choose Google Drive when shared office and photo folders matter most. Choose pCloud for a normal cloud drive plus an optional private folder. Choose Sync.com when zero-knowledge privacy comes before RAW previews.

Choose Dropbox for a busy team, client uploads, and shared review. Choose PhotoShelter when a portfolio and proofing system should connect to the image archive. Choose two external drives plus cloud when local speed, clear ownership, and a low-complexity recovery path matter most.

Many photographers will be safest with two picks, not one. Backblaze plus two local drives is a simple backup plan. PhotoShelter plus a general computer backup covers both delivery and recovery. A NAS plus versioned object storage can serve a larger studio.

Test a restore before trusting the backup

A green check mark says a task ran. It does not prove the right files can come back. CISA also advises regular tests of backup availability and integrity.

Set a reminder every few months and restore a small job to a new folder. Include:

  • RAW files from each camera in current use.
  • JPEG or TIFF masters and one layered edit.
  • XMP sidecars, catalogs, presets, and fonts used by the job.
  • A video clip, contract, invoice, and release form.
  • One older version and one file deleted on purpose.

Complete the restore check

Open the restored files in the real editing apps. Check names, folder paths, dates, metadata, color profiles, and links between catalogs and originals. Compare a few file hashes if the backup tool supports them. Time the restore, but treat that number as a result for this connection and this test, not a promise for every loss.

The right cloud storage for photographers can bring a complete job back when the easy copy is gone. Keep more than one copy, keep one away from the studio, and prove the restore while the originals are still safe.
